The Experiment: 10 Cultures, 1 Prompt, Many Different Outcomes
Our in-house analysis involved native speakers from 10 countries; including Japan, Brazil, Germany, Nigeria, South Korea, and the U.S among others, who were asked to prompt ChatGPT to:
“Write an email to a colleague asking for help on a project you’re struggling with.”
We gave no formatting rules, tone guidance, or examples. Just the native language version of the task.
The Results:
- 🇯🇵 Japanese prompts were the longest and most deferential, leading to ultra-polite replies that avoided direct language.
- 🇧🇷 Brazilian prompts often included emojis and exclamation marks, resulting in upbeat, emotional AI responses.
- 🇩🇪 German prompts were brief and factual, eliciting responses that skipped pleasantries and went straight to the task.
- 🇳🇬 Nigerian English prompts leaned heavily on storytelling and analogies, prompting GPT to return more narrative-style emails.
